WebAssistant is compatible with various browsers, including Google Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, and Safari. The program is available on various platforms, including PC with Windows, Mac, and Linux. To use it, you need to have Java Virtual Machine version 8 or higher installed. The program, including the HTML documentation, is only about 10 MByte in size due to its implementation in Java technology.

Additionally, you can gain insight into the http or https protocol of the web pages you visit, which can help you expand your knowledge of the Internet.

The WebAssistant is an app that connects the browser and the Internet router. It can also be used in an intranet with an available proxy. The software is available in English and German. Updates can be quickly installed online. The system installation is simple, with easy-to-understand steps and settings that do not cause any other changes to the computer. For network-based apps, the embedding of locally available websites on the Internet is exemplary.

The following points are the most interesting:

  • Websites visited are automatically downloaded and stored locally as a cache for re-browsing. The data that you download is saved to reduce page loading times when you revisit them. This also includes search queries in search engines or entries in forms. Much of what was previously only available online can now be accessed offline! As a user, you will hardly notice any difference between online and offline mode. It is this principle that characterises the offline reader.
  • Automatically highlight links to locally available resources. Highlight changes between online and locally downloaded HTML pages.

Integration of the app

The WebAssistant connects your computer's browser to the internet. This means that the browser communicates with the servers on the Internet through the WebAssistant, which acts as a proxy. In particular, all web pages requested from the Internet first pass through the WebAssistant and are automatically saved in its cache archives.

The browser requires an entry to use the proxy for the corresponding protocols. The entry contains the address of the proxy and the port via which the two programs communicate with each other.

Protocols of the webpages

Websites on the internet are stored on multiple servers. Each website is made up of various resources, including HTML pages, images, and PDF files. The address of each resource is called a Uniform Resource Locator (URL). To retrieve a web page, enter the corresponding URL in your browser, e.q. https://MM3Tools.com/WebAssistant/.

The URL starts with the protocol, in this case, https. The protocol sets the rules for communication between your computer and the server.

When browsing the internet, the following protocols are used:

https
This is the most commonly used protocol on the Internet today. It ensures that data cannot be falsified or recorded unnoticed during transmission. Browsers add this protocol by default if you do not specify a protocol in the URL.
http
However, this protocol does not use any security functions and is therefore no longer recommended for the Internet.
ftp
It is a protocol for downloading large files.

Archiving

The WebAssistant creates a file in the cache archive for each resource to be archived. The path and file name are derived from the respective URL. This mapping of a URL to the file directory allows retrieval of a resource in offline mode using the same URL as from the Internet. Retrieving the resource again in online mode automatically updates it in the cache archive.

You can create various cache archives based on your interests and topic. The downloaded web pages (URLs) are saved and listed under the domain name in a clear hierarchy, similar to a file explorer. This facilitates and speeds up the retrieval of visited websites. The archiving process only uses the file system of the respective operating system. Larger files can be compressed to save storage space. Internet copies, including HTML pages, images, and PDFs, are displayed transparently.

This tool allows you to create website archives based on your own criteria and save them in different folders. You can also save the data on other storage devices, such as USB sticks or CD-ROMs, in Joliet format. This makes it possible to archive and store versions of websites that are no longer available online. You can easily work with multiple folders and transfer them to a notebook by copying them. When surfing, there is little difference between online and offline modes. You can use the list of archives and your bookmark collection to navigate in both modes.

Note

Some web page deliver different content under the same URL, such as daily news or continuation pages. This practice inevitably leads to difficulties with archiving. It is recommended to use unique URLs for each piece of content.

Accelaration

Existing local web pages and images can speed up online browsing. Individualized and time-stamped web pages can also be reused. Additionally, links on a web page can be loaded and saved in the background. A website can be completely mirrored, including subpages up to a pre-defined depth. This functionality is often expected from a crawler or grabber. You can configure extensive filtering of web pages and individual profile or session settings. This allows you to hide advertising, for example.

Use of the app

There are a variety of business and private uses, e.g. for education, training or entertainment.

The familiar display and operation of a website can be used during a customer meeting or a presentation without having to rely on the availability of the server or an online connection or having to take the current Internet load into account. To study a field of knowledge or to prepare for a vacation trip, all interesting pages can be compiled and evaluated offline. The proxy can be used for information terminals.
